Favorite Board and Picture Books

Picture books hold a special place in our hearts, whether we remember reading them aloud or being read to. We'll often turn to the classics, which are a nostalgic treat, but there are many wonderful new books that are destined to be classics in their own time. Here are a few of our recent favorites.

In the context of counting dots, the book explores the multitude of things you might create or imagine from those simple black circles. One black dot could be a sun or it could be a moon. Four dots could become seeds or radio dials. With seven dots, you could have a spotted snake or some stones. The illustrations are simple but colorful and I love the playfulness of the dots being rearranged into different scenarios.

One boy, fishing in a pond, finds his nice quiet day becoming less so as a frog and some ducks and fish and, finally, six buzzing mosquitoes each add their noises to the chorus. I think that readers and listeners will have a lot of fun repeating the animal sounds, ending each time with the big frog’s “GA-DUNK!”

A follow up of sorts to Michael Rosen's modern classic We're Going On a Bear Hunt, this story follows Bear on an expedition into the city, where he finds some new friends. The bouncy call and response text makes it a perfect read-aloud that is sure to become a favorite.

Tea with Milk (Paperback)

Tea with Milk is a delightfully written and beautifully illustrated children's picture book by Allen Say. It is a story about May, a young Japanese girl who was born in the USA but is suddenly uprooted by her parents when they decide to return to their homeland. Living in Japan is very unpleasant for May because her parents insist on her conforming to their traditions and marrying the man who is chosen for her. Then, one day, she strikes out on her own and moves to the big city of Osaka, where she finds a whole new life waiting for her. This story is a wonderful rendering of how one woman discovers the true path to home. I highly recommend it for both children and adults.

The hilariously neurotic Scaredy Squirrel makes us all laugh with his goofy, nervous, toothy grin and his numerous plans for dealing with dangerous situations. The Galaxy Bookshop staff agrees that this follow-up to Scaredy Squirrel is the funniest of the two books, but we recommend you check out both of them.

Belly Button Book (Board Books)

Who doesn't love belly buttons (or be-bos, as baby Hippo calls them in this adorable book)? I don't think you can't go wrong with one of Sandra Boynton's board books for the 1-3 year old set.

From Dawn till Dusk (Library Binding)

ISBN-13: 9780618186556
Availability: Out of Print
Published: Houghton Mifflin Books for Children, 10/2002
Another favorite author--who also happens to be a Vermonter and one of my favorite people--is Natalie Kinsey-Warnock. Her stories of growing up in rural Vermont, often based on her own experiences or family stories, show a lovely slice of farm life, childhood, and family. From Dawn Till Dusk is beautifully illustrated with full-color woodcuts by Mary Azarian and is also available in paperback.

My Father the Dog (Paperback)

$6.99
ISBN-13: 9780763630775
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Candlewick, 4/2008
Have you ever noticed some strange similarities between your dad and your dog? (Hey, they even sound similar...) Elizabeth Bluemle (co-owner of The Flying Pig Bookstore in Shelburne!) makes a very funny case comparing these two loved and loving family members.

Cinder Edna (Paperback)

$6.99
ISBN-13: 9780688162955
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: HarperCollins, 9/1998
I love fairy tale re-tellings, and this is an especially good one. Cinderella is only a side story in this tale of the independent, environmentally conscious, joke-loving Cinder Edna. This is a funny book with a feisty heroine who doesn't need a prince to save her, but who just might find a happy-ever-after ending her own way.

Diary of a Wombat (Paperback)

$6.99
ISBN-13: 9780547076690
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days
Published: Sandpiper, 3/2009
One little wombat causes a lot of trouble for a family that unknowingly moves into its neighborhood. The fuzzy, sleepy-eyed creature will have you chuckling at its view of humans-as-carrot-dispensers, and despite its bad behavior, you might end up wishing you could have a wombat, too.

Zen Ties (Hardcover)

ISBN-13: 9780439634250
Availability: Usually Ships in 1-5 days

A beautiful follow-up to Zen Shorts, the giant panda Stillwater is enjoying a visit from his nephew, Koo. With a light touch, Muth expertly weaves lessons in with his gentle story.

This stunning illustrated poem from Neil Gaiman and Charles Vess is a prayer and a blessing for all girls and women. It is certainly a book to be treasured and shared with loved ones. Read our review.
