In the context of counting dots, the book explores the multitude of things you might create or imagine from those simple black circles. One black dot could be a sun or it could be a moon. Four dots could become seeds or radio dials. With seven dots, you could have a spotted snake or some stones. The illustrations are simple but colorful and I love the playfulness of the dots being rearranged into different scenarios.

A follow up of sorts to Michael Rosen's modern classic We're Going On a Bear Hunt, this story follows Bear on an expedition into the city, where he finds some new friends. The bouncy call and response text makes it a perfect read-aloud that is sure to become a favorite.

Tea with Milk is a delightfully written and beautifully illustrated children's picture book by Allen Say. It is a story about May, a young Japanese girl who was born in the USA but is suddenly uprooted by her parents when they decide to return to their homeland. Living in Japan is very unpleasant for May because her parents insist on her conforming to their traditions and marrying the man who is chosen for her. Then, one day, she strikes out on her own and moves to the big city of Osaka, where she finds a whole new life waiting for her. This story is a wonderful rendering of how one woman discovers the true path to home. I highly recommend it for both children and adults.

Who doesn't love belly buttons (or be-bos, as baby Hippo calls them in this adorable book)? I don't think you can't go wrong with one of Sandra Boynton's board books for the 1-3 year old set.

Have you ever noticed some strange similarities between your dad and your dog? (Hey, they even sound similar...) Elizabeth Bluemle (co-owner of The Flying Pig Bookstore in Shelburne!) makes a very funny case comparing these two loved and loving family members.

One little wombat causes a lot of trouble for a family that unknowingly moves into its neighborhood. The fuzzy, sleepy-eyed creature will have you chuckling at its view of humans-as-carrot-dispensers, and despite its bad behavior, you might end up wishing you could have a wombat, too.

This stunning illustrated poem from Neil Gaiman and Charles Vess is a prayer and a blessing for all girls and women. It is certainly a book to be treasured and shared with loved ones. Read our review.

The old woman down the street who keeps goats seems odd to some people, but the children understand that she's someone very special. This is a lovely story about kindness and courage.
