When you think of an experienced mountain climber, you might picture a man or woman with sinewy legs, a sunburned face, and windblown hair. You might not imagine a 7 year old girl with over 48 summits under her small belt. Patricia Ellis Herr's memoir, Up: A Mother and Daughter's Peakbagging Adventure, is the story of the two years they spent together summiting peaks in the White Mountains on a quest to join the 4,000 Footer Club. It is the story of one small girl with incredible energy and drive who does not seem to know the meaning of the word "can't."

Ellis Herr will be at The Galaxy Bookshop on Tuesday, July 17th, at 7 p.m. to talk about those experiences and sign copies of her book.  

Earth pond building expert Tim Matson will be at The Galaxy Bookshop on Tuesday, July 31st, to talk about the new, updated edition of his classic guide, Earth Ponds: The Country Pond Maker's Guide to Building, Maintenance, and Restoration. Bring questions about your own pond or plans straight to the source! 

For thirty years now, Earth Ponds, with some 100,000 copies in print, has guided an entire generation of pond makers on everything from site planning to soil sampling to drainage and wildlife management. It 's a complete overview of the country pond. Illustrations guide the pond builder through every step of the process and the new edition of the book includes clear photographs for further explanation; chapters carefully describe the issues and decisions in a wonderfully personal way. 

Writer David Goodman will be at The Galaxy Bookshop on Thursday, August 2nd from 6:00 - 7:00 p.m. to discuss When the River Rose: Stories of a Vermont Town's Flood, Recovery, and Rebirth. Goodman donated his time to edit this book, as many others donated their time and expertise to publish this collection of stories and photographs of the town of Waterbury's experiences during and after Hurricane Irene.

All proceeds from the sale of When the River Rose go directly to ReBuild Waterbury to aid individuals and families in rebuilding homes that were damaged or destroyed by the storm.
