About the Author
Deborah Clifford, the first woman president of the Vermont Historical Society, lived in Vermont from 1966 to 2008. During her life, she published biographies of three nineteenth-century American women: Julia Ward Howe, Lydia Maria Child, and Abby Maria Hemenway. She also wrote and lectured widely on the history of Vermont women.
